Seven top Italian filmmakers pooled their talents on the landmark neorealist omnibus feature Love in the City (1953, L’amore in città). In Michelangelo Antonioni’s (La Notte) “Attempted Suicide”, several non- professional actors discuss the reasons for their despair. Dino Risi’s (Il sorpasso) “Paradise for Three Hours” is a humorous glance at a provincial dance hall. Federico Fellini’s (8 1⁄2) “Marriage Agency” finds an investigative reporter posing as a husband-to-be. Cesare Zavattini (Bicycle Thieves) and Francesco Maselli’s “Story of Caterina” dramatizes the true story of a young unwed mother. Carlo Lizzani’s “Paid Love” speaks to Roman sex workers of various ages. And “Italians Stare”, written and directed by Alberto Lattuada, illustrates the various “girl-watching” techniques of Italian males. Love in the City is presented in a 4K restoration that was carried out by the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Minerva Pictures, using the original image and sound negatives provided by Studio Cine.
